Ammunition Shortage Continues to Affect San Angelo Gun Owners

SAN ANGELO, TX – San Angelo as well as the rest of the state of Texas is suffering from a shortage of ammunition.

If you go to any gun shop in San Angelo you'll notice that something is missing. Empty shelves upon empty shelves, where ammunition used to be, are now collecting dust.

"It's been a nationwide hit," said an employee at the Outdoorsmen. "We've been told that there is a nearly billion dollar backup on orders from manufacturers."

He thinks that this backup won't be resolved until the third quarter of 2022 and "that's if we're lucky."

Even huge retail stores like Academy have had to limit ammunition purchases. "Ammunition Limits: Three Units Overall On All Handgun and Rifle Calibers Per Customer Per Day" states a large sign in Academy's ammo section of the store.

They have also placed a sign in the entrance letting buyers know if they had a shipment of ammunition. On Jan. 19 there was no ammunition shipment.

At another local gun shop, Texas Gun Shop, the parking lot was full and customers were parked down Park St. nearly to the International Water Lilly Collection. Although the store had the customers, they had nothing to sell.

"So y'all are pretty much out of the common stuff?" A customer was overheard asking the clerk behind the desk. "Yes sir," the clerk replied. "Are you guys out of toilet paper in the back too?" the man snapped back to the clerk.

The main reason for the ammunition shortage is the record setting number of guns purchased in 2020. Whether it was from growing tensions in the nation, COVID-19, or the 2020 election the increase in gun purchases has caused a shortage of ammunition like this nation has never seen.

If you made it to the end of the story then you deserve a reward. Academy will receive a shipment of ammunition Wednesday according to Academy employees.
