WASHINGTON D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives Friday approved legislation that would legalize marijuana at the federal level.
Here is a statement from CD-11 Congressman Mike Conaway:
"The House is in session this week, as we race against the clock before funding expires next Friday. This should absolutely be crunch time. Congress cannot risk saddling the American people with yet another crisis—a government shutdown.
Unfortunately, instead of funding our military and government agencies or providing targeted relief to small business owners and workers who are enduring additional lockdowns, Nancy Pelosi has brought us back to vote to legalize Marijuana.
There is absolutely no excuse for the Democrats, who are playing politics with the American peoples lives and livelihoods, to be forcing the House to waste its time on such trivial matters."
The legislation also would expunge the legal records of thousands of people and require re-sentencing for convicts who are in prison on marijuana charges.
The house voted 228-164 to pass the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act on Friday, the first time either chamber of Congress has ever voted to decriminalize marijuana.
The legislation is unlikely to pass the Republican controlled Senate at this time.
