ABILENE, TX — The Abilene Regional Airport will be expanding its flight options later this year by adding a second airline.
According to KTXS, beginning October 21st United Airlines will be expanding its flight services from Abilene to Houston.
“United’s new service is the culmination of ABI staff’s years of building relationships and telling Abilene’s story. We’re excited to offer our passengers another airline choice to meet the demand we know exists here,” said City of Abilene Director of Transportation Services Don Green.
The expansion was made possible after the city council voted last month to accept a $1.2 million Small Community Air Service Development Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation
"In layman's terms, it's saying to an airline, 'Hey, come and do business. If you don't make your profitability like you're supposed to at this dollar amount, we'll supplement the difference,'" said Kate Alvarez, Airport Marketing and Development Manager.
Travelers will have the opportunity to take the 1 hour and 25-minute flight twice a day from either airport.
According to the United Airlines website, flights are currently scheduled to depart from Abilene Regional Airport at 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The flights from George Bush Intercontinental/Houston Airport will depart at 2:20 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
