Bar Closed After Defying Gov Abbott's Executive Order

ABILENE, TX — After defying Gov. Abbott’s order to close all bars in Texas, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission temporarily closed The Whiskey Girl's. The bar lost its liquor permit for 30 days.

According to KTXS, on Friday the owner of the bar, Coy Chew, published a post on Facebook advertising Fireball Friday. In the post, the bar seemed to openly defy the governor’s new order.

“We will be open at 4! Just like before our heart is not to be disrespectful but, we have to look out for our team and our business! Unless someone else is offering to pay our bills #GovAbbottForSugarDaddy As always if you don’t feel well, please stay home. Happy Hour 6-8 $1 Wells and Free Pool! See y’all later!”

On Friday night, the TABC visited 628 bars in Texas and found only 30 remained open. According to the agency, 28 of 30 open bars agreed to close their doors. The Whiskey Girl in Abilene and Outlaws Longview in Longview simply refused to comply.

“We know bar and restaurant owners have been suffering mightily throughout this pandemic," said TABC Executive Director Bentley Nettles. "By taking these extraordinary steps to limit capacity and close doors, lives will be saved and we can increase the chances of successfully reopening businesses in the future.”

On Saturday afternoon The Whiskey Girl stated it would comply with the governor’s order for now. If the bar violates the order again they would face a 60-day suspension. 

"After discussing our options and weighing out the pros and cons with our lawyer, we are going to comply with Gov. Abbott’s orders (for now)," said Chew. "We will continue to look for and explore our options to get us back up and running."
