Aunt Jemima Dropping 'Racial Stereotype' Name

SAN ANGELO, TX – One of the most famous labels seen on grocery store shelves and cabinets is Aunt Jemima. Whether it be pancake mix or syrup Aunt Jemima can be bought at nearly every grocery store in America. 

Now Quaker Oats, the owner of Aunt Jemima, has decided to get ride of the brand and in a deferent direction. Land O'Lakes butter made a similar decision early this year by removing the Native American woman from the packaging. 

"As we work to make progress toward racial equality through several initiatives, we also must take a hard look at our portfolio of brands and ensure they reflect our values and meet our consumers' expectations," the company said in a statement. 

Aunt Jemima's website says the logo started in 1890 and was based on Nancy Green, a "storyteller, cook and missionary worker," but doesn't mention that Green was born into slavery.

“We recognize Aunt Jemima’s origins are based on a racial stereotype," said Kristin Kroepfl, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Quaker Foods North America. "While work has been done over the years to update the brand in a manner intended to be appropriate and respectful, we realize those changes are not enough.""

It is unclear how they will be changing the name or logo as of now.
