Shelter is Full; PAWS to Host Free Adoption Event

SAN ANGELO, TX – Concho Valley PAWS is hosting a free adoption event on Thursday, March 5 and Friday March 6 from 2pm-8pm.  This event is to encourage people to adopt or foster and thus prevent pets being euthanized due to space.

"We have some amazing animals at the shelter and everyone of them are adoptable and deserving of a home.  It would be devastating to see an animal euthanized just to make room for a new arrival.  We have worked too hard and invested too much into these animals to allow that to happen." said Jenie Wilson, PAWS Executive Director.

The free adoption includes spay or neuter, microchip, vaccinations and a free collar, leash and ID tag.  Any long-stay pet that is adopted will also receive complimentary training from the trainers at Red Paw K9 training.  "This is an excellent time to adopt and take advantage of the free adoptions and training." Wilson said.

The purpose for free events is to prompt potential adopters to take action.  "Now is the time to get involved.  We have an urgent need and if fostering pet or adopting a pet is something that you have considered, acting now will not only be beneficial to you by free adoptions but beneficial to the community and the animal whose life you will save." Wilson said.

The PAWS staff does want to encourage adopters to really take a moment to get to know some of the shelter's long stay.  "There are some amazing dogs in the kennels that have been here for months.  They are really good, smart dogs who want to please their human but for whatever reason they are overlooked.  Sometimes good dogs are overlooked because of their appearance, their breed or even their color." Wilson said.  But the free event is open to all adult dogs and cats in the shelter.  Wilson said, "Whether you adopt a long stay or a pet that has only been here a week, you are saving a life because your adoption will create space."

PAWS is also looking for foster homes.  Fostering a pet will save its life and help make it more adoptable by getting it out of the shelter environment.  PAWS fosters are volunteers who agree to temporarily house a pet until a permanent home can be found.  PAWS provides for all the needs of the foster pet including food, kennel, and all veterinary care.  Fostering doesn't cost a volunteer anything.  "We are just looking for good people to open their heart and their home to a homeless pet to prevent adoptable animals from being euthanized for space." Wilson said.
