Shannon Medical Center Achieves 5 Star Status

SAN ANGELO, TX – Shannon Medical Center has achieved 5 star status—a prestigious honor given to the most elite hospitals in the nation. The rating is listed on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website.

According to a press release, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) analyze over 4,500 hospitals nationwide that report data through the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program to distribute a rating system based on multiple areas of service and care. Customers can use this data whenever making decisions on where and from whom to seek care.

The methodology uses a distinct model to measure the statistics that go into seven groups of measures. The measurement groups include mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging. Once all the measures are collected, a hospital summary score is calculated by taking the weighted average of the group score.

Out of the total number of hospitals in the United States, only 407 ranked well enough in these categories to receive 5 star status, with 37 of these being in Texas. Shannon Medical Center was one of those 37, ranking in the top 9% of hospitals nation-wide.

“The ranking system is based on qualitative data based on the care we provide our patients each and every day,” said Shane Plymell, CEO of Shannon. “We have been a 4 star hospital for several years, which is very difficult to obtain in itself, but we set a goal less than two years ago to become a 5 star hospital. I want to commend all of our Providers and Associates for their continued focus and hard work to help us reach this momentous achievement.”
