Businesses and schools throughout the Concho Valley were closed today to honor MLK day.

Since 1986 the United States has set the third Monday in January aside to honor the accomplishments and ideas that Dr. King lived by.

San Angelo has many opportunities to celebrate including going down the MLK Memorial park, attending various celebrations, or by just showing kind gestures to everyone.

King lived his life by preaching good deeds and equality to everyone. He headed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the 1960s in the Civil Rights Movement. During this movement, King gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. In King's speech he called for civil and economic rights for minorities in the United States.

“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
