Girl Scouts To Retire A Cookie Flavor at the End of the Season

SAN ANGELO, TX - The best time of the year is fast approaching...Girl Scout cookies go on sale on January 15! For five weeks the local Girl Scout troop will be selling their famous cookies in the Concho Valley. This year is extra special as one of the nine cookie flavors will be retiring after this season.

Girl Scouts of Central Texas worked hard during 2019 and their effort is reflected by the 2.8 million boxes of cookies they sold last year. With 11,251 troop members selling cookies in Central Texas alone, each girl scout sold an average of 250 boxes.

They currently offer the following flavors: Caramel DeLites, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Lemonades, Peanut Butter Patties, Shortbreads, S'mores, Thanks-a-lots, Thin Mints, and Caramel Chocolate Chip, which is gluten-free.

Thanks-a-lots will officially be retiring at the end of this season. For those not familiar with this particular cookie, it is a shortbread cookie with fudge on the bottom. They feature the words “Thank You" embossed on the cookie.

Last year the Girl Scouts used the funds they earned during Cookie Season to travel to Australia, Costa Rica, Switzerland, and Italy. They completed community service projects and experienced innovative STEM programs. They also went on horseback rides, sailing adventures, and hiking expeditions at Girl Scout Camp.

"I enjoy participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program because it helps me to learn about important skills," said Cadette Liv, "I love meeting new people at booths and working with the girls in my troop to sell cookies."

The cookie program promotes financial literacy in girls K-12. In a study conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute, 12 percent of girl scouts feel that they are "very confident" with money, 20 percent are receiving financial literacy education in school, and 9 in 10 say it is important to learn how to manage money.

Being involved in the cookie program provides girls with invaluable life skills, camaraderie with other members and a chance to explore STEM programs. That is what the Girl Scouts call "the power of the cookie."
