Sales Tax Holiday Weekend Starts Friday
SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo retailers are gearing up for the annual Sales Tax Holiday Weekend beginning Friday.
According to the Texas Comptroller's office, during this annual sales tax holiday, you can buy most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) tax free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases, you do not need to give the seller an exemption certificate to buy qualifying items tax free.
This year’s sales tax holiday begins Friday, Aug. 9, and goes through midnight Sunday, Aug. 11.
The sales tax exemption applies only to qualifying items you buy during the sales tax holiday. Items you buy before or after the sales tax holiday do not qualify for exemption, and there is no tax refund available.
Tax free items during the Sales Tax Holiday Weekend include clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks.
The Sales Tax Holiday Weekend began in 1999. The sales tax exemption also applies to purchases made on layaway, ordered online, and for special orders and rain checks.
“As Texas families begin the process of replacing their beach towels with lunch boxes, the sales tax holiday is the perfect opportunity to save some money on supplies families need before the school bell rings,” Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said in a statement. “As a father of three, I know how these expenses can add up.”
Shoppers will save an estimated $102.2 million in state and local sales taxes during the event, according to a press release from the Texas comptroller of public accounts.
