Hunting Enthusiasts Pack Convention Center Raising $300K for Charity

 

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Hundreds of west Texas sportsmen and hunting enthusiasts packed the McNease Convention Center in San Angelo Saturday evening for the fifth annual Safari Club International San Angelo Chapter Hunters Extravaganza to raise tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships and wildlife conservation.

The event included live and silent auctions, drawings, dinner and a keynote speaker.

World renowned wildlife biologist and hunter Larry Weishuhn was the keynote speaker.  Known as "Mr. Whitetail," Wieshuhn is an outdoor writer, author, speaker, TV host and conservationist.  Weishuhn told the sold-out crowd to take a friend or family member hunting and share the life changing experience with them.  

The live auction included 246 items including African Safaris, jewelry, hunting and fishing trips and even a brand new Mahindra Roxor off-road vehicle worth $21,000.  

All tolled, the auction items had a combined estimated retail value of $288,688.

SCI San Angelo Chapter President Jimmy Fontenot said, "We are proud to support many youth hunting opportunities and scholarships in our county and surrounding areas in addition to numerous conservation initiatives all over the world."

In 2018, SCI San Angelo awarded grants totalling $97,773 to the Angelo State University Scholarships, ASU Shooting Sports including the Scholarship endowment fund, British Columbia Trappers Association, Caribou Chilcotin Guides Association, Children's Advocacy Center, City of San Angelo Neighborhood Fishing Program, Crossroads at Panadero Ranch, Forever Foundation for Texas Wildlife, Irion County 4-H Shooting Sports, San Angelo Gun Club Daughters at the Range, National Rifle Association, Texas Brigates Youth Summer Programs, Texas Taxidermy Association, Trinity Oaks, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.  

The San Angelo SCI Chapter in four years awarded $277,842 in grants.
