SAN ANGELO, TX -- The City of San Angelo's Public Information Office won eight statewide video awards last week, including two first-place trophies and a third place for overall excellence for SATV, the City’s government access channel.
The awards were announced Nov. 7 at the annual conference of the Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors. Each was won in the classification of municipal information offices with annual operating budgets of at least $200,000. The videos that were honored were:
“Clocked In,” first place in the Magazine Format Series. “Clocked In” follows public servants as they go about their jobs, explaining what they do, how and why.
“I Love Everything about this Job: Officer Conner Gochenauer,” first place in Public Service Announcement. This SAPD recruiting video features a young officer talking about what he loves about his service to the community.
“Cool Cat Dudes,” second place in Public Service Announcement. This series of videos promoted cat adoptions and starred men who love their cats, with the tagline, “Cats … they’re not just for crazy ladies.”
“Fort Concho 150th Anniversary Tribute,” second place in Event/Program Promotion. This video tribute highlighted San Angelo’s national historic landmark on its sesquicentennial year.
“Sparkle: The 3rd of July,” second place in Community Event Coverage. This piece spotlighted one of San Angelo’s signature events, the July 3 Pops Concert at the RiverStage.
“Fit City: Swimming,” third place in Public Education. The latest installment in a series on fitness opportunities in the community, this episode featured Love Municipal Pool and Lake Nasworthy.
“San Angelo’s Hidden Gem: The San Angelo Nature Center,” third place in Profile of an Organization/Department. This video highlighted some of the fun that occurs regularly at the Nature Center.
"Video is a great way to engage citizens in their government in fun and meaningful ways," City Videographer Brian Groves said. "We hope our citizens enjoy watching these works as much as we enjoyed producing them."
All of the videos can be viewed on the City of San Angelo YouTube channel or on SATV, Suddenlink cable channel 17.
Also during the conference, Groves served on a panel about challenges often faced by his peer group.
TATOA is a professional organization of those responsible for telecommunication policies, services and video programming in local governments. This is the sixth straight year the Public Information Office has won awards in TATOA’s statewide video competition.
In August, the short film “Shattered Dreams” won first place in the Children/Young Adults category of the annual competition of the National Association of Telecommunications Officers of America. “Shattered Dreams,” which warned teens of the dangers of drinking and driving, previously won a Lone Star Emmy Award. This was the first year the Public Information Office has entered the NATOA competition.
