San Angelo’s Congressman Conaway Passes 2018 Farm Bill in the House

WASHINGTON, DC -- On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives advanced the 2018 Farm Bill created by the House Agriculture Committee which is chaired by Congressman Mike Conaway of Midland, whose 11th District includes San Angelo.

According to Conaway’s office, H.R. 2 provides certainty to farmers and ranchers who have been struggling under the weight of a 5-year recession and provides work-capable #SNAP recipients with the hand up they need to find work to support their families.

Here’s Conaway’s statement on passage of the House farm bill.  “Today’s vote was about keeping faith with the men and women of rural America and about the enduring promise of the dignity of a day’s work.  It was about providing certainty to farmers and ranchers who have been struggling under the weight of a five year recession and about providing our neighbors in need with more than just a handout, but a hand up.  I’m proud of what this body has accomplished, and now look forward to working with the Senate and the President to deliver a farm bill on time to the American people.”

Passage of the House farm bill, which would re-authorize programs ranging from nutrition assistance and crop subsidies to rural development and agricultural research, now moves Congress one step closer to sending a bill to President Donald Trump before the current legislation expires at the end of September. The Senate is planning to take up its version, which has bipartisan support, as soon as next week and passage is widely expected.
