Boom! Another Global Oil Field Services and Manufacturing Company Locates to San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX — Special Materials Company (SMC), a global specialty chemical producer and supplier, is pleased to announce the opening of its new chemical manufacturing and warehousing facilities in San Angelo to better serve its new and current customers in the Permian Basin. SMC's move here comes after the Texas Workforce Commission announced a 3 percent unemployment rate for April 2018 fueled primarily by growth in oil field and manufacturing jobs.

The facilities will produce and distribute a variety of SMC’s oilfield product line, including: friction reducers, scale inhibitors, clay stabilizers, phosphorous acid and derivatives, iron control agents and the company’s line of EPA registered biocides. In addition, SMC will provide toll blending capabilities, primarily biocides, for Oil & Gas customers.

“We aspire to be a leading supplier for the Oilfield Chemical market by developing valuable partnerships throughout the supply chain, while adhering to our strong safety and environmental compliance policies,” said Executive Vice President & Founder Kevin Huber. “As part of our company’s growth strategy, this new investment will enable SMC to provide high quality products and rapid access to our customers as per industry standards as well as make timely deliveries at the clients’ end.”

“We congratulate Special Materials Company (SMC) on today’s announcement and thank the company for its decision to expand into San Angelo. We look forward to working with them to get this new facility up and running,” said Vice President of Economic Development for the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Michael Looney.

“We are excited to welcome Special Materials Company (SMC) to the City of San Angelo and to the business community. We are excited to have new business and employment opportunities for our citizens and at the same time have an opportunity to welcome new people to our great city,” said San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter.

Founded in 1996, Special Materials Company is a global producer and marketer of specialty chemicals serving multiple industries, including Oil & Gas, Paint & Coatings, Paper, Water Treatment, Electronics, Agriculture, and Textiles. In addition, SMC is a proud member of the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) and part of the Top 100 Chemical Distributor listing from ICIS.

SMC Global has secured two locations in San Angelo:  1) 3820 Christoval Road, an 11,150 sf facility on 2 ½ acres.  2) 3862 Tractor Trail which is 16,000 sf on 5 acres.

The Christoval facility will be used for mixing and blending the chemical components and packaging them for distribution and use in the field.  The Tractor Trail facility will be used for distribution of the products to the customers.

SMC will run a fleet of 5 trucks from Tractor Trail for distribution of their products.

The Chamber’s VP of Economic Development Michael Looney began working with SMC's leadership and site selection team early in 2018.  He said when working with SMC’s leadership team, he learned the execs were impressed with San Angelo and really liked the welcoming business environment, clean and available facilities, and the high quality of life that sets San Angelo apart from other Permian Basin cities.
