Downtown San Angelo, Inc. Accredited as a Main Street America Program for 2017-18

SAN ANGELO, TX — Downtown San Angelo, Inc. is designated as an accredited Main Street America program again this year after meeting rigorous performance standards set by the National Main Street Center. 

Each year, the National Main Street Center and its Coordinating Program partners announce the list of accredited Main Street America programs in recognition of their exemplary commitment to preservation-based economic development and community revitalization through MSA's "Main Street Approach."

“It is a great honor to recognize this year’s 828 nationally Accredited Main Street America programs for their outstanding work to transform downtown and neighborhood commercial districts,” said Patrice Frey, President & CEO of the National Main Street Center. "Main Streets are the heart of our communities, and the work they do to create quality public spaces, catalyze local entrepreneurship, and support downtown housing is more important than ever. Across the county, Main Street America programs truly strengthen the economic, social, and cultural fabric of their entire communities."

The organization’s performance is annually evaluated by the Texas Main Street Program tun by the Texas Historical Commission. The commission that works in partnership with the National Main Street Center identifies local programs that meet 10 performance standards. Evaluation criteria determines the communities that are building comprehensive and sustainable revitalization efforts and include standards such as fostering strong public-private partnerships, securing an operating budget, tracking programmatic progress and actively preserving historic buildings.

“The 2017 1st Quarter Reinvestment Summary reflected $116.2 million reinvested in the downtown San Angelo area in the 10 years that the DSA Main Street program has been under way”, stated Del Velasquez, DSA Executive Director.

Brenda Gunter, DSA Board President, stated “every year brings new people, new interest and creative ideas to diversify and broaden the scope of the downtown district. Our focus will continue to be broadening the range of business and increasing the potential for further development and also the preservation of our rich west Texas history. Growth and continued progress will happen in our Historic Downtown - one building, one business, one block at a time”.
