Cyber Monday Forecast to Be the Largest in History

According to the Adobe Digital Index report, one of the most comprehensive reports of its kind, released last week, today’s Cyber Monday forecast in the U.S. is expected to hit $3 billion dollars, which will make today the largest single day for online sales in history. Additionally, mobile phone purchases will drive the majority of shopping traffic for the first time at 51 percent.

Being that Cyber Monday deals started prior to today just as Black Friday deals started early, that may have something to do with this increase. Also, like Black Friday, West Texans looking for the best deals will want to get on social media.

“The best time to buy depends both on discounts and product availability,” stated the report. “Shoppers are more likely to find discounts via display ads and social media.”

This year, social media will continue to affect the sales. The report stated that each social media visit will yield $1 of revenue. Facebook revenue per visit is estimated to yield $124; Pinterest is expected to yield $.74 per visit, Twitter, $.60 per visit and Reddit, $.57 per visit.

Overall, during the year, Adobe stated that only 1 percent of products drive 65 percent of online shopping; however, that jumps to 76 percent during the holidays.

“The 1% of products that account for the majority of online sales are mostly electronic items (60%) and gift cards,” said the report.

As for mobile sales, the report indicated that IOS will drive the majority of the sales at 22 percent while Android will only drive 7 percent.

“iPhone users are 23 percent more likely to purchase than Android users,” the report noted.

Based on early indicators of social offers, top gift items include the following:

  • Star Wars toys
  • Barbie and American Girl dolls
  • Apple Watch
  • GoPro
  • Fitbit
  • Apple TV, Roku and Chromecast (with Apple TV leading the sales)
  • iPad, Kindle and iPad Mini (iPad leads the tablet sales)
  • PlayStation 4
  • Minecraft and Halo 5
  • Sony, LG and Samsung 4K TVs (Sony leads)
