San Angelo has developed its own style as far as hair and fashion goes, but for those wishing to stay abreast of the city's latest trends, local hairstylist Amanda Henson has made some predictions on what will be the top hair trends of 2015.
Henson works at Beautiful People, 1809 Freeland Ave., and said based upon what she saw last year and in the final months of 2014 she anticipates San Angeloans will opt to keep their colors more natural this year, punching up their styles with texture and movement. Men are not exempt, she said, noting that more and more men are starting to maintain their hairstyles as well.
Below are the projected top 10 styles of 2015 for San Angelo.
Winter Blondes
Just before Thanksgiving and Christmas salons pick up in traffic as men and women prepare for the holidays. Usually, the tendency is to go darker in the winter months, but in 2014, the trend was light. Henson anticipates this trend will continue through spring and summer 2015.
Farrah Fawcett Hair
“Seventies hair is back,” Henson said. “Movement, texture, waves—no more straight and boring.” A lot of the styles she has cut recently have been long, she said, and the tendency has been that more and more San Angeloans are growing out their tresses and going for beach waves, layers and curl.
Heavy Fringe
“Bangs” or “fringe” have been in and out of style a lot over the past several years, but Henson said thick and heavy fringe cuts are coming back in 2015, particularly the textured, low-maintenance variety that rests just above the eyebrows.
Pompadour
“Guys are starting to care more about their hair and they way that they look,” Henson said. “The pompadore is huge right now.” The style keeps the hair tight or shaven on the sides while the top is lighter and combed over and to the back.
Natural Lights
Highlights and lowlights are always in style, but Henson is predicting people will keep their colors more natural in 2015, shying away from dramatic black and blonde juxtapositions and favoring instead shades that blend better with their natural color.
The Long Pixie
Shorter styles will get a bit longer in 2015, as both the pixie and the bob add a little more length than in previous years. Longer front pieces and lots of layers are expected for both styles, which are pretty much always in fashion.
Pastels and Peek-a-Boos
Cleverly-hidden hints of color are back in style this year, both in light pastel shades anticipated to be worn in the summer, and red and purple “peek-a-boos”, or small clumps of strands that peek out under layers. Tom Green County Treasurer Diana Spieker sports a purple peek-a-boo that can be tucked away with a bobby pin on formal occasions.
Tidy Men’s Cuts
Although textured is in this year for both men and women, Henson said San Angelo prefers tidier cuts in men’s hair, possibly due to the presence of the Air Force Base and oilfield. Short, military-style haircuts have been popular in the area for some time, Henson said, but men are starting to care more about their appearance and their hairstyles.
Thick and Curly
An emerging trend among teenage boys, Henson said, is to let their hair grow long and thick—particularly if it is curly—and top it off with a beenie or cap. Boys are showing a lot more of their curls and waves, she said, shying away from shorter cuts.
Braids
Long braids worn off the side are gaining in popularity, Henson said, as are braids in general. Loose, tight, small or large, braids are anticipated to become more popular throughout the new year.
