Overnight Structure Fire at Golden Chick in San Angelo

The Golden Chick Restaurant, 3393 Knickerbocker Road, caught fire early Thursday morning at 12:45 a.m. The manager at the establishment said that the restaurant may be closed for up to three weeks to repair the damage.

Some of the damage is caused by water, the manager said.

As of 7:30 a.m., Golden Chick is without power, and has been since the fire.

The manager said that the San Angelo Fire Department put the fire out quickly and that it appeared to her that the flames and smoke originated in the attic of the building.

The manager said that the cleaning crew at  neighboring West Central Wireless saw the smoke and originally thought the fire and smoke was coming from the next door Burger King. They called 911.

John Basquez reported from the scene.

UPDATE: San Angelo Fire Investigator Karla Steppe said the fire was accidental and is confident the source of the blaze was near a neon sign on the building's exterior.

She said the fire melted through plastic water supply pipes and helped contain the flames until fire crews could extinguish it completely.

The fire was reported by a janitorial staff working in the complex.

Steppe said the structure had some water damage as a result.
