“I have gone there since I was born,” Courtnie Arrott said of the business she and her husband Kit now own.
She said it was established in 1928 as McGowen's Grocery Store but was quickly bought out by Mr. Taylor to become what San Angelo knows as Mr. T’s Deli.
“My husband worked in food services for 19 years and he just wanted to do something different...We wanted to turn Mr. T’s around to what it used to be,” Arrott said.
The two decided to remodel the the inside of the building.
“It was just kind of going downhill and I think it just needed to be revived,” Arrott said.
After shutting down for a week for the remodeling, the business re-opened Dec. 9.
Arrott said, “Everything is remodeled, the whole inside.”
Kit, a chef and baker, also decided to preserve Mr. T’s original menu.
Arrott said, “Kit makes everything homemade, so a lot of the same menu items have just been improved. We also brought back the full menu. It hasn’t been that way in a while.”
So far, the favorites on the menu have been the Thursday special, chicken fried chicken, as well as their hamburgers.
Under the new ownership, customers can expect a “bright and clean environment,” she said.
Both Kit and Courtnie Arrott were born and raised in San Angelo. Their new business adventure is about continuing tradition.
Arrott said, “We plan to do things with the parade and tree lighting and incorporate our restaurant in with the neighborhood.
She said, “I think it just brings San Angelo a hometown business within the neighborhood. There are a lot of different things done in Santa Rita, it is the Santa Rita tradition that is expected in Mr. T’s Deli.”
The couple want customers to see that they are “continuing tradition” and should “expect the unexpected when it comes to the menu”.
