Raised in San Angelo, Texas, Samuel was one of ten children and carried forward the warmth of a big family with an easy, outgoing spirit that made others feel welcome. He attended Central High School and San Angelo College, and in those early years he found joy in simple pleasures and friendly competition—baseball, basketball, driving Ford Mustangs, and bowling—interests that reflected both his lively nature and his steady focus.
Samuel worked as an insurance agent until retiring in 2026. Throughout his life, he remained someone people enjoyed being around—quick with a witty remark, bright in conversation, and gracious in the way he noticed and appreciated others. At home, he loved spending time with his dogs, Ginger and Ash, and he enjoyed watching sports and novelas. He also loved Mexican food, working on puzzles, and was phenomenal at chess. Fluent in Spanish, he carried his heritage and language with pride and ease, offering “Te amo” as naturally as a smile.
In 1970, Samuel married Marilyn Lee, and they remained together until her passing in 2022. He was a devoted husband and, in 1971, welcomed his daughter, Michelle Lynn. His love expanded again with his grandchildren: Candace Rae Longoria (1990), Brianna Lynn Longoria (1995), Derian Gage Havard (2000), and Caden Lehne Havard (2006). With them, Samuel’s intelligence and humor shone especially brightly—whether playing games, sharing laughter, playing chess, or taking them for snow cones. To his grandchildren, he was “Papa,” and his presence was a constant source of joy, patience, and kindness.
Samuel will be remembered as a man of wisdom and gentle understanding—someone who believed in giving others the benefit of the doubt and in always telling the truth. He stayed open to new ideas, carried himself with quiet goodness, and brought a jovial lightness to everyday moments. Many will recall his familiar sayings: “Be the best you can be,” “ah-HA,” “Te amo,” and “goodbye my friend.”
He is also survived by his siblings Ramona Garcia, Buddy Menchaca, and Amanda Gonzales.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Trinity Arispe and Angel Rivas, who provided stellar care to Samuel while he was in the hospital, where he learned he had stage 4 cancer. The family also thanks Hospice of San Angelo for their kindness during his last month. Special thanks are offered to Savanna Smith, Bertha “Birdie” Lopez, and Erika Mancinas for being part of Samuel’s last few weeks during a hard period; all three gave exceptional care to him and to the family and will always hold a special place in their hearts.
Samuel’s presence will be missed deeply. He was full of hope, joy, and positivity, and to those who knew him best—especially his grandchildren—he was the best grandfather (“Papa”) in the entire world. Thank you, Papa, for the memories, for raising and caring for your grandchildren, and for showing patience, love, and kindness.
