Mr. Andrew James Powell transitioned to his heavenly home on Sunday, May 17, 2026. James recently celebrated his 78th birthday surrounded by his loving family.
Viewing will be from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, May 22, 2026 at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Celebration of Life services will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, May 23, 2026 at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.
Andrew James Powell was born on April 23, 1948, to Beatrice Powell Riles and James "Speedy" Garfield in Spur, Texas. James graduated from San Angelo Central High School. After high school he joined the Job Corps and spent many years in service and in training. Mr. Powell was a veteran and served in the United States Air Force. James was a career master welder and worked at Hershfield Steel for many years.
James was a Christian who dedicated his time and service helping individuals recovering from substance abuse. He loved baseball and spent many years coaching his beloved son. James treasured spending time with his family, especially during the Edwards-Powell Family Reunions. At the reunions he could always be found cracking jokes, teasing everyone in attendance, and playing dominos. He loved to dress to the nine in tailored suits with his fedoras and Stacy Adams. He was sharp as a tack and boy did he know it!
He was preceded in death by his beloved Mother, Father, Step-Father George Riles, Sister Janet Daniels, and numerous cherished Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Damon Powell (Laticha) of San Angelo; brother Keith Thornton (Shirley) of Lubbock;Grandchildren, Davon Powell, Raven Powell, Kassidy Martin, Destiny Powell, Beatrice Powell, DJ Powell, Kaden Martin, Mark Poteet, and Damion Powell and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
