Joel “Joey” Wayne Halfmann, 59, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family after a hard-fought battle with prostate cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2019. Joey faced every challenge with grit, determination, and unwavering faith in God, never allowing his illness to take away the strength and spirit that defined him.
Born on February 16, 1967, in San Angelo to Tex and Barbara Halfmann, Joey was raised with the values of hard work, loyalty, and faith that he carried proudly throughout his life. He graduated from Garden City High School before attending Texas State Technical Institute. Joey went on to dedicate many years of service to Concho Valley Electric Cooperative before retiring, where he earned the respect of coworkers and friends alike for his unmatched work ethic, intelligence, and willingness to help anyone in need.
Joey was the definition of a man’s man. Tough, hardworking, and dependable, there truly wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. If something was broken, Joey could fix it. If something needed building, he could build it better than anyone else. He was the kind of man who could figure out anything with his own two hands and never backed down from hard work. People naturally gravitated toward him for advice because chances were, Joey already knew how to do it, and do it right.
The outdoors was where Joey felt most at home. Hunting and fishing weren’t just hobbies to him; they were a way of life. He was especially known for making varmint calls and had a remarkable talent for it. Joey owned and operated Hairy Legged Critter Calls, where he handcrafted and sold varmint calls, combining his creativity, craftsmanship, and love for the outdoors into something he was deeply passionate about. He was also a licensed firearm manufacturer who built and repaired guns with incredible precision and skill. Joey took pride in his craftsmanship, and anyone who knew him knew the care and talent he put into everything he touched.
He was an exceptional marksman, the kind of shooter people talked about with admiration. From 100 yards away, Joey’s shots could group within the size of a dime — a reflection of the patience, focus, and precision he carried into every part of his life. There was never a challenge too big for him to tackle or a skill he couldn’t master once he set his mind to it.
Above all else, Joey loved his family fiercely. He married the love of his life, Janet Halfmann, in 2004, and together they built a life centered around love, faith, family, and devotion to one another. Joey was a devoted husband, loving father, proud son and brother, and the very best “JoJo.” His family was his greatest pride and greatest joy. He was the kind of man who would do absolutely anything for the people he loved.
Some of the best memories made with Joey were the simple moments — sitting outside listening to his stories, learning from him without even realizing it, laughing together, or simply enjoying his presence. Joey never met a stranger. He had a gift for conversation and storytelling, making everyone around him feel welcome, valued, and like an old friend the moment they met him.
Joey was also a devout Catholic whose faith remained steadfast throughout his entire life. His relationship with God guided the way he lived, loved, worked, and cared for others. Throughout his battle with cancer, he leaned heavily on his faith and trusted the Lord through every difficult moment. His strength, courage, and unwavering belief were an inspiration to everyone around him. Even in the face of hardship, Joey remained strong for his family and continued to live with grace, humility, and resilience.
To know Joey was to know loyalty, wisdom, strength, humor, and unconditional love. Though his family’s hearts are broken by this tremendous loss, they find comfort in knowing he is now healed and at peace in the presence of the Lord he trusted so deeply. The stories he told, the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he gave so freely will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Joey was preceded in death by his grandparents Mack and Emma Halfmann and Clarence(CJ) and Eugenia Lange.
He is survived by his wife Janet Halfmann and their chosen children Bella Halfmann(Kaleb) and Riley Jetton.
