Our beloved mom and granny, Marie Phillips, 94, of Big Lake passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025 with family by her side.
There will not be a public viewing at the funeral home. Graveside services will be at 12:00 PM on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at Glen Rest Cemetery in Big Lake with pastor Gerry Henderson, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.
Marie was born on March 27, 1931 in Milam County to H. K. and Annie Rosemond Young. She grew up in Palm Springs, California where she went to work at an early age. Marie moved to Big Lake and later married James Phillips, Sr. He preceded her in death on October 10, 1981.
She was a strong woman and the heart of her home. Marie's life was dedicated to taking care of her family and being a "momma bear" to her children. A strong woman who loved the Lord and worked hard all her life. Her journey on earth was marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. Her passing left a void in the hearts of her family and friends but also filled their hearts with memories that will last a lifetime.
Marie had many people she loved and some she chose as her family. Stacey Stroud and Marie had an amazing bond and love for each other. Stacey was always there to support, take care of Marie's needs and to comfort and advocate for her in her last days. Barbara Doege held an incredibly special place in her heart. Each one devoted their time, support and always loved without hesitation.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, James Ervin Phillips, Sr.; a son, Willie Earl Young; three brothers, Charlie Salter, Arthur Young, and James Petty; and four sisters, Mae Jewel Pellum, Clara Ellison, Bernice Wells, Lula Colbert.
She is survived by her three children, Tommy Joe Phillips and wife Juanita of Big Lake, James Phillips and wife Diane of Big Lake, and Dorothy Phillips of California; a sister, Bettey Spencer; her grandchildren, Jennifer Phillips, Paula Phillips, Leticia Phillips, Eric Phillips, Katherine Jones and husband Nate of Odessa, Joshea Holt, TJ Young, Tyler Doege, Tiffany Young, and Lori Shaw; 13 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; daughter-in-law Barbara Doege wife of Willie Earl Young; and Louis Colbert, her forever soulmate, helpmate, and protector.
Special thanks to the amazing staff at Reagan County Care Center and Hospice of San Angelo.
Pallbearers will be Jody Garber, Nate Jones, Eric Phillips, Devante Jackson, Juwan Lee, and Dailey Robinson.
Things Marie taught us:
God gave us five senses, He said, "use 'em and don't abuse 'em."
God don't like you no better than he likes me. He don't care if you're black, white, green or yellow. People do that but God don't.
A still tongue makes a wise head. Keep your mouth shut!
Understanding beats the world.
Baby, God don't play!
God said, "Be still, I'll fight your battles."
Everybody for themselves and God for us all
Oh, but when the momma's gone.......
