Clemencia Aguirre Lopez of San Angelo, Texas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the age of 98. Born on December 18, 1926, in Melvin, Texas, she was one of 14 siblings and grew up immersed in family, faith, and a steadfast work ethic that shaped her life.
Throughout her years, Clemencia embraced many roles with grace and determination—from migrant laborer and cook to caregiver for the elderly, a calling she continued until the age of 70. Among her most cherished jobs was serving as an elevator operator at the historic Cactus Hotel in San Angelo. A devout Catholic, she was a proud member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she most recently served in the funeral ministry.
During her time as a migrant worker in the Texas Panhandle, her children fondly recall her rising before dawn to prepare breakfast and lunch for long days in the cotton fields. Cold fried chicken, eaten under the hot sun, became a symbol of her love, sacrifice, and enduring strength—its taste still evokes treasured memories.
Clemencia was preceded in death by her husband, Ciriaco Lopez; her parents, Julian Aguirre and Paula Ahuera; brothers Frank, Marcelino, "Chente," Trinida Sr., and Joe; sisters Angelita "Nene," Concha, Evangelina "Eva," and Eloisa; and her beloved grandsons, Trey Peña and Daniel Peña.
She is survived by her eight children: Cathy Gonzales; Guadalupe & Patsy Gonzalez; Rubén & Imelda Gonzales; Ciriaco & Sandra Lopez Jr.; Paul & Victoria Lopez; Deacon Mike & Martha Lopez; Joey & Alina Lopez; and Galdino & Janie Peña. She is also survived by her brother Julian and sisters Pauline "Paula," Maryann, and Susie. Clemencia leaves behind a legacy of love through her 24 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren—with two more on the way.
Clemencia was the heart of her family—strong, spirited, and deeply devoted. She continued driving herself around town until the age of 95, always present for birthdays, weddings, graduations, sporting events, and every special occasion. She adored her shows—cheering on her beloved Texas Rangers, watching her novelas with passion, and never missing an episode of Survivor, which she followed faithfully as a devoted fan. She also loved playing Skip-Bo, and she took no prisoners—her competitive streak was legendary, and every game was played with fierce joy and laughter.
Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life; she lived through nine Popes and was blessed to see Pope John Paul II during his visit to San Antonio.
On the day of her passing, a gentle rain shower and a rainbow graced the sky—a beautiful sign witnessed by her family, reminding them of the grace and peace that surrounded her final moments.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Hospice of San Angelo for their compassionate care during Clemencia’s final days. Special thanks go to Elsa, whose kindness and dedication went above and beyond.
A Rosary will be held on Thursday, September 25, at 6:00 PM at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 26, at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in San Angelo, Texas.
