Phyllis J. Halfmann Smith, 77 of Ft. Stockton, Tx.. went to be with the Lord on April 30 in San Angelo, Texas following a brief illness. Born in Ballinger, Texas October 28, 1947.
Phyllis graduated from Wall High School in 1966 and attended Angelo State University.
In 1979 she and her family moved to Ft. Stockton, Tx. She learned to love the hot dry and arid climate. Phyllis was employed at Enron for 23 years. She was the last employee to leave the Enron Ft. Stockton office. With all of her retirement fund gone she went to work for the Texas Dept. of Corrections. She retired after 12 years with the state and declared herself retired at age 63 yrs.
In 1986 she married the love of herlife, Mickey Smith. Mickey also gave her six step children and their spouses. Chuck Smith, Kayleen Rivera and husband Steve, Mike Tyrrell and wife Tammie, Tom Tyrrell, Dawn Clayton and husband Gary and Sharon Tyrrell. Which she fell in love with instantly.
In 1988 her son Jack C. Burleson II died and in 1991 her daughter, Julie A. Burleson died. Phyllis and Mickey loved to travel. Traveling to Phoenix AZ NASCAR races, Las Vegas, NV., San Antonio , Tx. visiting grandkids or Washington state, visiting his brother or, Abilene, Tx. watching a granddaughter's baseball game. Phyllis went to Greece last year with her sisters visiting her niece Helen. Phyllis also supported many groups in Ft. Stockton. The Ft. Stockton Silhouette Shooters sponsoring the 1987 International Silhouette Shooters Championships. Phyllis won 1st place in the revolver Class B shooters. Phyllis was a member of St. Anges Catholic Church, Ft. Stockton Senior Center quilting group, First Baptist Church Ladies Bible Study group and served on the Ft. Stockton Cemetery Advisory Board for 32 years.
Phyllis and her mother, Geraldine, cut, pieced and quilted hundreds of quilts. The last quilt she was working on is a Wall Hawks T-Shirt quilt for her brother Brian and sister-in-law, Rhonda. Phyllis’ best friends were her sisters, brothers and her first cousins, (especially the Gully girls) Going to AJRA Junior rodeos to gambling in Wendover, Nevada and WinStar Casino in Oklahoma. Phyllis always had a smile and a friendly hello. She loved her friends and they loved her. She was the peacemaker and matriarch of the family.
She is preceded in death by husband Mickey, her children, Jack and Julie Burleson, step son Chuck Smith, her parents, Alex and Geraldine Halfmann and a very special great niece, Hadlee A. Holik. Survivors include: Brothers; Bobby Halfmann and wife, Sharon, of Wall, Bruce Halfmann of San Angelo, and Brian Halfmann and wife Rhonda of Wall. Sisters, Pam Stokes, of Wall and Priscilla Halfmann of San Angelo. Nieces: Helen Harris of Glyfada, Greece, Courtney Stokes Hambright and husband, James of Dry Ridge, Kentucky, Casi Halfmann and husband Brad of Rusidoso, New Mexico, Brianne Killam and husband Duane of Wall, Shyanne Holik and husband Jason of Wall. Nephews: Tyler Halfmann and wife Laci of Wall, Justin Halfmann and wife Lisa of San Angelo. Her Stepchildren and their families. Uncle and aunt: Alan and Marilyn Halfmann of Olfen and Kathy Halfmann of Olfen. She is also survived by great nieces and nephews, numerous cousins and many friends. Pallbearers for the service will be Tyler Halfmann, Justin Halfmann, Duane Killam, Jason Holik, Truman Rivera, Gary Clayton and Mike Tyrrell. The rosary will be at 10:00 A.M., Monday, May 5, 2025, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 A.M., Monday, May 5, 2025, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. The burial will be 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at East Hill Cemetery in Fort Stockton, Texas. Pallbearers for the service will be Tyler Halfmann, Duane Killam, Jason Holik, Truman Rivera, Gary Clayton and Mike Tyrrell.
