Carl D. Montgomery Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and educator, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, in San Angelo, Texas, at the age of 81.
Born on March 17, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas, Carl was the son of Carl and Maudi Montgomery. He spent his formative years in Ozona, Texas, where he distinguished himself as a gifted athlete in football and track. It was also in Ozona that Carl cultivated a lifelong love for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing along the Pecos and Devils rivers—a passion that remained with him throughout his life.
After high school, Carl married Jayne Cole, and together they raised three children: Patrick, Amy, and Benjamin. Carl began his professional life with a brief and proud tenure as a Texas Game Warden before moving to San Angelo to attend Angelo College. There, he earned his teaching degree and began a career that would span more than three decades.
As a teacher, coach, and driver's education instructor in San Angelo, Carl influenced countless young lives. Known for his humor, and steady guidance, he left an indelible mark on generations of students and athletes.
Later in life, Carl found love again and married Jeanette Manton. Together they shared many adventures—traveling to the mountains out West, relaxing on the beaches, and enjoying conventions across the country. Their time together was filled with joy, laughter, and deep companionship.
Carl never lost his deep connection to nature. Some of his most treasured memories were spent outdoors hunting and fishing, particularly with his son Ben and grandson Brooks Montgomery.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Maudi Montgomery, his grandparents, his first wife Jayne, his children Patrick and Amy, and his brother Robert Montgomery.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Jeanette Montgomery; son Ben and wife Baylissa Montgomery; son-in-law Mark Kitchens; grandchildren Jared Kitchens, Chandler Kitchens, Sterling Kitchens, Brooks Montgomery, and Blakely Montgomery; sister-in-law Becky Montgomery; nieces Susan Halberg and Michelle Good.
Carl will be remembered for his strength, always doing things his way, and his orneriness, not to mention a heart as wide and wild as the outdoors he loved. He will be deeply missed by all who have the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Carl’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Carl’s memory to a local wildlife conservation organization or a charity of your choice.
