Clarence Buford “Buck” James of San Angelo, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2025, at 88 years old, surrounded by his beloved family.
Buck was born on February 24, 1937, in Orient, Texas, to George Henry James Sr. and Katy Bell James. He graduated from Bronte High School in 1955 and spent his life dedicated to hard work, family, and faith.
A lifelong farmer and rancher, Buck also served as a patrolman with the San Angelo Police Department, where he was part of the first K-9 unit to serve the city. Later, he worked at Goodyear Proving Grounds, where he retired in 2001 after many years of loyal service. During his time at Goodyear, Buck was awarded the prestigious Worldwide Spirit Award.
In the 1960s, Buck played Cowboy Polo, where his team earned a world championship title — a testament to his competitive spirit and love for the western way of life. He also served in the National Guard for many years, continuing a legacy of service to both community and country.
Buck was known for his warm personality and his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. He never met a stranger, and people were naturally drawn to his smile and entertaining stories. He loved spending time with his family, sharing laughs with friends, and soaking in life’s simple pleasures.
Buck will be remembered for his unwavering faith and his boundless love for his family and God. He was a devout Christian and served as a deacon for many years. His marriage to Norma Katherine Crawford was a living testament of enduring love, built on mutual respect, commitment, and a shared life of faith. Together for nearly 70 years, they created a home filled with love, laughter and many children. Each child chosen and deeply cherished. Buck poured himself into fatherhood, never wavering in his support, guidance, or protection. His love extended through generations, and his greatest joy was being surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren — the legacy he was most proud of.
Buck is survived by his loving wife of nearly 70 years, Norma Katherine James, and their children: Kyle James (Kathy), Bruce James (Katie), Butch James (Melissa), Charles “Chuck” Hardgrave (Melissa). Leslie Hernandez (Benny), Lindy Allen (Jody), Cerina Switzer (Seth), Kara James and 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and countless extended family members.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George Henry James Sr. and Katy Bell James; his siblings: Melvin James, R.L. James, George James Jr., Katy Chambers, Dorothy McClure, Hazel Magness; his firstborn son, Thomas Buford James; and his grandson, Christopher Thomas James.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Gentiva Hospice, Veterans Affairs and Accent Care for their compassion, guidance, and support during Buck’s final days. Their kindness will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Harper Funeral Home. Services will take place on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 10:00 AM, also at Harper Funeral Home, with graveside service to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Buck’s memory to the Children’s Advocacy Center of Greater West Texas.
