Betsy Sikes of Pecos, Texas passed away at the age of 73 on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at Odessa Regional Medical Center.
She was born on February 4, 1952, in San Angelo, Texas to Geraldine and L.B.T. Sikes. Her two older brothers David and Richard welcomed her to the family.
Betsy attended school in Ozona and graduated with the class of 1970. While a student at Ozona High School, she participated in many extracurricular activities. Tennis and basketball were her favorites. She later went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in biology from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. She then began her lifetime career as a teacher and coach for Pecos Barstow Toyah Independent School District. As a high school science teacher and girls coach, Betsy held high expectations for her students and athletes, as well as for herself as a role model, going above and beyond to help all students. Betsy retired after faithfully teaching for 34 years. Even in retirement, Betsy diligently and thankfully responded to the call to tutor students at both the high school and junior high levels.
Betsy taught herself how to play golf while in Pecos at the short course in Pyote, Texas. She loved golf and coached several student golfers. She spent many years playing in various golf tournaments across West Texas and the Permian Basin. She won several ladies golf association city championships. Betsy played in numerous local and regional golf tournaments, competing as an individual as well as partnering with the young and old, men and women, carrying them to multiple victories with her ever-reliable golf skills and entertaining them with her great sense of humor.
Graveside services will be held Friday, April 4, 2025, at 2 pm at Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a memorial donation to the charity of your choice that supports cancer or heart research and health. The family would also like to thank Odessa Regional Medical Center and Betsy’s best friends Tina Rhoads and Elizabeth Jones Upham who were her sisters in Christ and were always by her side.
Betsy is preceded in death by her parents Geraldine and L.B.T. Sikes and her brothers David and Richard Sikes.
Betsy is survived by her niece Elizabeth Miller and great niece Natalie Miller of Abilene, Texas, nephew Michael Sikes of Rockwall, Texas, sisters-in-law Linda Sikes Chisholm of Abilene and Gay Sikes Gorman of Rockwall.
