Inez Penilla, 80 years young of San Angelo, Texas, passed away at home on March 23, 2025. Inez was born on August 29, 1944, in Eden, Texas, to the parents of Augustine Penilla Sr. and Martiana Gonzalez.
Inez shared many stories with us about her childhood and growing up. Her family were migrant ranchers; she also told testimonials about all her caregiving days as she was a dedicated caregiver for over 40 years. She cherished her breakfast crew, Ruben Espinosa, Irma Ramos, and Marcello Constancio, at her favorite “Spot” Gil’s. She enjoyed watching sports, especially her fútbol. She loved shopping; never a day went by without her checking out the QVC channel. Most important to her was to spend time with her grand and great-grandchildren. Inez had a golden green thumb; her most favorite place to be outside gardening.
I chose not to lose my mom, and instead to gain an angel. In my mind, my heart, and my life, she is still completely present to this day—and as wise, compassionate, and stubborn as ever.
Inez was preceded in death by both parents and three children: Irma Felan, Brenda Hidalgo, and Joaquin Jr. Felan.
Inez has nine sisters, and two brothers as follows: Maria Gonzales, Encarnacion “Chona” Hernandez, Selia Placencio, Eva Delgado, Adelina Martinez, Belia Escamilla, Rita Gomez, Manuela McGraw, Alberta Silva, Steven Penilla, and Augustine Penilla Jr.
Inez is survived by her son Harvey Penilla Hinojos and wife Lucy. Daughter Veronica Leigh Gaitan. Grandchildren Stevie Andrade and wife Daisy, Lucinda Deanda and husband Alex, Barbara Felan, Kristy Hinojos, Joe Martin and wife Christine, Cassandra Hinojos and Sipriano Hidalgo jr. Great grandchildren Daniella Jacobs, Harvey Hinojos, Eric Ramirez, Desiree Swift and husband Jeremy, Jacob Andrade, Irma Gutierrez, Spencer Gutierrez, Angelica Gutierrez, Faith Gonzalez, Ernest Gonzalez and A.J. Felan, Dezeray Hinojos, Tony Ray Hinojos. Reynol Palos Jr. and Austin Martin. One great-great granddaughter Ariaa Gutierrez.
