Phil was born on December 6, 1945 in Clovis, N.M. Phil graduated from Tulia High School in 1964, and played in the Texas High School All State Game after graduation. Phil was recruited by all of the South West Conference schools and ultimately accepted a football scholarship to Texas Tech. As a 3 year starter he was selected as first team All American and All SWC in 1967. He was later inducted into The Texas Tech Hall of Fame in 1992 and the SWC Hall of Fame in 2019. He played one year for the Edmonton Eskimoes in the Canadian Football League.
Phil was a member of Phi Delta Theta at Texas Tech and remained friends with fraternity brothers for the rest of his life. After his playing career, Phil coached football in west Texas until 1975 when he moved his family from Idalou, TX to Brownfield, TX and entered the private business sector. In 1993 Phil returned back to coaching and retired from Cameron Yoe in 2010 after 22 years total of coaching and inspiring young athletes and students. Throughout his life, Phil held a special place in his heart for people who served in the military, firefighters, police and teachers and often secretly performed acts of kindness for those people.
