Lon L. Martin, 90, a true Texas legend, rode into the sunset on January 9, 2025. Born on October 30, 1934 and raised by Frank and Delia Mooney in Muleshoe Texas. Lon lived a life as big as the Lone Star State itself.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Marvin and sister Selita.
He was a husband to his "Babe," Dorothy Jean, his high school sweetheart and loving companion for 72 years. Together, they started a family of five that continues to grow. Lon was father to: Denise McCain, Darla and Michael Dodge, and Ron L and Kelly Martin. Lon was a proud Pawpaw to his grandchildren – Amber and Chris Pearce, Jason and Megan Ambrose, April and Noah Wright, Michael and Erica Ellen, Lyndal and Kimberly McCain, Casey and Sarah Martin, Haley Martin, Jordan Weilbrenner, Erica and Spencer Berry. And a Great Pawpaw to a growing brood, including Cheyenne, Braxton, Kiah, Dani, Lucy, Georgia, Thomas, August, Nolan, Cade, Aubrey, Landon, Tatum and Cora.
Lon was a man of many trades. He farmed the West Texas land, his oversized and calloused hands a testament to a life of hard work. He was an entrepreneur, a visionary who built a catering service, a quirky burger joint, "JoJo's," a thriving bowling alley, "Coliseum Bowl," and even an oilpatch water trucking business. Through his many adventures, he built relationships that lasted a lifetime.
More than a businessman, Lon was a legend. Stories abound of his strength and kindness. He was a protector, a friend, and a father figure to many. He was a man of his word, honest and true to his core.
Lon will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His spirit, like the vast Texas sky, will forever be a part of this land.
A celebration of Lon's life will be held on January 24, 2025. Come prepared to share your favorite Lon stories (the funnier, the better).
Bring your best Lon impressions, your favorite "Pawpawisms," and your most cherished memories. Let's raise a glass or “Funny Coke,” as Pawpaw used to say, to a life well-lived, a life filled with laughter, love, and a whole lot of Texas grit.
