James “Buddy” Clinton Peel transitioned to his Heavenly home October 30, 2024. He was born April 4, 1940, in San Angelo to James Archie and Christine Johnson Peel. They lived in Texon, Texas, for six amazing years. His father worked for Texon Oil and Land Company and played baseball for the Texon Oilers. For Buddy these were wonderful growing up years. When he was six, he and his family moved to San Angelo.
Buddy attended San Angelo High School and Texas Tech. He spent a brief time in California; then he and his family moved to Arlington, Texas. Buddy’s profession was insurance, but his passion was working with young people. He spent over 30 years coaching football and baseball through the Optimist Club. During these years he touched the lives of many he coached, some of whom still keep in touch with him. He received a lifetime membership in the Optimist Club for his accomplishments.
In the early 1990’s, he met a classmate from Lee Junior High, Sylvia Roach Terrill. In 1991, they married and lived in Lubbock for several years. Then they moved to Dallas to be closer to his work. After five years of city life, they returned to San Angelo—Home.
After he moved to San Angelo, he became a Deacon in the First Baptist Church. He was very active in the church. He also served on the board of West Texas Boys Ranch for several years.
It was always his dream to begin a Bobcat Athletic Hall of Fame. It became a reality in 2010. He loved getting to know the inductees and many of them became close friends.
He was an avid golfer. He especially enjoyed fishing with his dad and hunting with friends and his boys.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1976, his mother in 1994, and his grandson Jason Daniel Shipp in 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Peel: children, Kent Terrill (Vicki) San Angelo, Kevin Peel (Sheila) Sherman, Kim Ivey (Toby) McQueeney, Kelly Peel (Phyllis) Weatherford, and Kendall Brown (Ross) North Carolina. Grandchildren: Ashlee Vasquez (Christopher) North Carolina, Taylor Merrill (John) Weatherford, Regan Peel (Joey) Weatherford, Will Terrill San Angelo, Tanner Ivey San Marcos, Kevin Bankston Sherman. Siblings: Janice Owen Temple Terrace, Florida, Bobby Peel (Karen) Lutz, Florida, and six great grands.
