Dr. Paul Bernard Hudman Jr., age 90 passed away peacefully at his home on September 29, 2024.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Harper Funeral Home. There will be a graveside service at 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Fairmount Cemetery.
Paul was born on March 20, 1934, in San Angelo, TX to Paul B. Hudman Sr. and Mary Lou Smith Hudman. He attended San Angelo schools while growing up and graduated in 1952 from San Angelo High School. While growing up he worked at Hudman Drug Store to help his parents. Later he attended Baylor University and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1956. Paul then entered the United States Army in 1956 and became a company commander in the Basic Officer’s Battalion of the United States Armor School. On August 20, 1957, he married LaWanda Jo Hall.
After completing his military service, Paul entered Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine from which he graduated in 1964. He became a partner in the Koberg, Joy, Hudman Veterinary Clinic. In 1969, Paul established Hudman Veterinary Clinic, and in 1976 established College Hills Animal Hospital.
In 1984, Paul was one of the owners of The Original Zentner’s Steak House until retirement in 2007. He also ranched in Miles, TX, where he raised and sold sheep and cows.
Paul was baptized, married and still a member of First Baptist Church. He spent twelve years on the San Angelo School board. He was a past member of the Elks Club, East Lions Club, Tom Green County Veterinary Medical Association, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, Board of Directors of TVMA of Texas, Texas Academy of Veterinary Medicine, and West Texas A&M Club.
Paul always felt he was born 150 years too late. In 1989, he bought a chuckwagon and started competing in chuckwagon cook-offs with his son Mark. They won numerous awards which included first place overall in 1992 at Red Steagall’s Cowboy Gathering and First Place overall in 1993 at The Old Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium. Hobbies over the years included hunting, fishing, sports, genealogy, western history, old western and war movies, cooking, baking, country music, and he was lifelong animal lover.
Preceding him in death is his wife, Wanda Hudman, sister Tommye Ray, and brother Gary Hudman.
He is survived by his son Mark Hudman (Terri), daughter Becky Hudman (Randy), granddaughter Chloe Hudman (David), niece Dawn Michelle Torres, nephew John Paul Hudman and cousin Aubrey Petty.
The family expresses deep appreciation to Cenida for her years of care, Concho Hearts Hospice, and caretakers Becky and Leta. Memorials may be made to West Texas Boys Ranch or a charity of choice.
