Mildred Maxine Wiley Plummer was born on a farm near Blanket, Texas on September 13, 1929 to Franklin Curry Wiley and Jessie Mae Haddon Wiley and passed away on August 18, 2024 after a well lived and much blessed life.
While Maxine was at Howard Payne University, she met Doyle Douglas Plummer from May, Texas who after service in the Navy in World War II was studying at Daniel Baker College. After waiting for her to graduate, they got married in July of 1952. After a short time, they soon moved to San Angelo, TX to teach and raise a family remaining there most of their lives.
Maxine was an amazing lady. She graduated as the Salutatorian of Brownwood High School in 1947. She then graduated from Howard Payne University with a Bachelor’s of Science, and later a Masters in Mathematics from the University of New Mexico in 1968. She dearly loved both Math and English and taught both for 28 years at Lincoln Junior High School and Lakeview Junior High School in San Angelo. Whilst not teaching the subjects, she also had a lifelong love of studying history, politics, and news/current events. Her favorite things were her family, books, puzzles, games with her grandchildren, cats and the occasional dog, and family history. She could always be found reading or doing a puzzle.
She was a person who wrote letters, to numerous people, often weekly. In an era before email and with expensive long distance, her constant correspondence helped keep her immediate and extended family in the loop. She later wrote encouraging notes weekly to her oldest grandchildren while they were at college, including their close friends. As a lifelong fan herself, she encouraged education and learning, and always read to her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always willing to take them to the library or bookstore and come see their school events.
She was a very special Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother (Gigi) and will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by husband, Doyle Plummer, parents Franklin Curry and Jessie Mae Wiley, and brother Billy Wiley.
Survived by sister Shirley Wiley Melane.
Daughter Darla Plummer Houpt (Jimmy), daughter Marsha Plummer Pyle, son Mike Plummer (Donna).
Grandchildren Brandon Houpt, Meredith Houpt Novak (Eric), Nathan Pyle, Ashley Pyle Jumper (Stephen), Adam Plummer, Elizabeth Plummer, and Quentin Plummer. Great Grandchildren Avah, Caitlin, Joshua, Ike, Meadow and Grace.
