Chester L. Hurlburt Sr., 96, of San Angelo, TX, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
Born on December 29, 1927, in Kewanna, IN, he was the first son to the late Lovell J. and Frances C. (Engel) Hurlburt.
Chester attended Kewanna High School and upon graduation enlisted in the United States Air Force in April of 1946 at the age of 19. MSGT Hurlburt traveled to many countries, including Greenland, Turkey, Germany, and the Philippines. He also was stationed throughout the United States, having served until his retirement in 1973.
Chester married Ida M. (Clark) Hurlburt on April 23, 1949 in Albany, Georgia. She preceded him in death on December 6, 2013.
A proud 30-year member of the San Angelo Lions Club having joined in October of 1993. Throughout his tenure he held office(s), was a recurring board member and was honored with two of the highest awards within the International Lions Club; the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2009 and the Jack Wiech Fellowship award in 2014.
Chester had a passion for all things fishing. As an enthusiastic fisherman and owner of C&C Custom Marine, Chester relished his time on the water. Many of those days shared with his late son, Chester L. Hurlburt Jr. Both were members of the Bassmasters, San Angelo Bass Busters, and Concho Bass Club.
When he was not setting the hook and wetting the line, he was officiating or assisting with other recreational sports. His interest in sports provided him with 52 years of officiant service. That also included time served with the City of San Angelo as an employee of the Parks and Recreation Department. Mr. Hurlburt was employed for 19 years and was instrumental with the completion of Rio Concho Community Park.
Chester was preceded in death by his parents, Lovell and Frances Hurlburt; wife, Ida M. (Clark) Hurlburt; son, Chester L. Hurlburt Jr.; brothers, Phillip Hurlburt Sr. and Kenneth Hurlburt Sr.; and sisters, Katherine (Hurlburt) Wright and Patricia (Hurlburt) Branson.
Left to cherish Mr. Hurlburt's memory is his granddaughter, Holly Hurlburt.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024 in the Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Johnson’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers are Robert Castillo and Wendell Ramsey.
