Ella Mae Johnson, a cherished pillar of her community and a beacon of strength and love, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2024, at the age of 91 in San Antonio, Texas. Born in Penelope, Texas, on August 28, 1932, Ella Mae was a woman of remarkable intellect and compassion, whose life was defined by her unwavering commitment to her family, her work, and her community.
Ella Mae's early education culminated as she proudly graduated as Salutatorian from Blackshear High School in a class of 21 students. Her thirst for knowledge and dedication to personal growth led her to further her education at Howard College and Angelo State College. The discipline and determination she showed in her academic pursuits were a testament to her character and served as an inspiration to those who knew her.
Ella Mae's professional life was marked by her tenure at Ethicon, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, where she dedicated 28 years of service as a quality assurance technician. Her commitment to excellence in her work was a reflection of her overall approach to life. After retirement, Ella Mae continued to touch lives as a devoted caregiver, selflessly attending to both the young and the elderly in her community, embodying the spirit of service that defined her.
Beyond her professional and caregiving roles, Ella Mae was an active and respected leader in numerous organizations. She served with distinction as the President of the NAACP for five years, demonstrating her dedication to civil rights and social justice. Her leadership extended over 25 years with the Stokes-Parker District, and she was a driving force as the President of the Rosary Reading and Art Club Of San Angelo, as well as serving as the 1st Vice President for the Texas Association of Colored Women's Clubs (TACWC). Ella Mae's involvement in these organizations was not merely a duty but a profound expression of her values and her desire to enact positive change.
Ella Mae's personal interests were as multifaceted as her contributions to society. Her passion for reading, art, and the uplifting of her community will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to experience her warmth and guidance. Her leadership and passion for service created a legacy that will continue to influence and inspire future generations.
Ella Mae was preceded in death by her mother, Rosie Lee Golden, father, Marvin Williams, daughter, Phyllis June Jones, sister, Esther Hockenhull, and brothers, Donald Gene Williams and Alvin Golden. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her loving family. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Rosie Mae Jones; her adoring grandchildren, Tryemaine R. Curtis and Megan Meeks-Chung, and Megan's husband, Keyon Chung. Ella Mae's legacy of love extends to her precious great-granddaughters, Keyonni A. Chung, Jabrasia, and Ahliyah Doss. Her son-in-laws, James Curtis and Jim Meeks, will also hold dear the memories of the wisdom and care she imparted.

Visitation for Ella Mae will be held from 4-8 pm on Friday, June 21, 2024 at Johnson's Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at Johnson's Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with a Celebration of Life to follow at 12 pm in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel.
