Virginia was born on October 30,1940 in Quanah to Leonard "Blondie" and Bonnie Eddins Pettit. She attended Quanah schools and graduated from Quanah High School in 1959. She met the love of her life, Galen P. Lane, and they married in Quanah on June 30, 1958. Virginia had a life full of adventure as a military and civilian spouse living in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Kansas Japan and Germany (during the Cold War). Throughout all of her travels she made numerous life-long friends and had many humorous stories to tell.
Virginia accepted Christ as her savior as a child and served Him faithfully throughout her life in both children's ministries and through a women's ministry she both started and led for many years at Immanuel Baptist Church in San Angelo. In addition, she was an active volunteer and community member. She frequently cooked food and/or took homemade craft items to families and friends. She hosted afternoon socials for new neighbors in her retirement community to ensure they felt welcome in the neighborhood. She had a natural gift for making people feel welcome in her home, community, and church.
Virginia was extremely gifted in arts and crafts and could make beautiful items out of anything. She learned Japanese flower arranging and doll making when living in Japan. She made floral arrangements for her home for all seasons and holidays. She prided herself on her home and home décor and could make any room look inviting. She enjoyed using her talents in the many children's Sunday School and Vacation Bible School class she taught along with her planning and leading an adult women's ministry making crafts while studying the Bible.
Her greatest passion in life was her family. She faithfully attended sports and activities for her three children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved playing games and when the family was visiting, could be found at the dining room table with dominoes, cards of other games teaching the next generation. Many of her grandchildren's favorite memories involve her teaching and playing games with them.
She is survived by her three children, Gayla Thorpe and husband David of Cedar Park, Gwen Davis of Quanah, and Lamar Lane and wife JoLisa of Amarillo. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Cole Davis, Lauren Vicente, Ben Thorpe, Lyndee Ward, Ross Davis, Kale Lane, and Keely Lane along with 13 ½ great-grandchildren, numerous great-grand dogs, cats and horses!
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Galen Lane; her father, Leonard Pettit; her mother, Bonnie Pettit; her brothers, Jim Pettit and Dan Pettit; one grandson, Pake Lane; and numerous furry family members.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the City of San Angelo Animal Shelter, 3142 US Highway 67 North, San Angelo, Texas 76905, a local SPCA or Immanuel Baptist Church 90 E 14th St, San Angelo, TX 76903.
