Donald Wayne Bunnell, 77, of San Angelo, TX, passed away on March 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 13, 1946, in Paradise, TX, to the late Herman and Nettie Bunnell. Donald was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose memory will forever be cherished.
Donald graduated from Paradise High School, attended the University of North Texas, and then went on to graduate from Sargent Major Academy. On December 27, 2016, he married the love of his life, Shelly Schumpert, with whom he shared many joyous years.
In service to his country, Donald proudly served in the Army National Guard for 38 years and retired with the rank of Brigade Command Sargent Major. In addition to his service, he embarked on a successful career spanning 43 years with General Mills.
Donald was a 50 year Mason and Shiner, and a member of The Suez Shrine where he was honored as Potentate in 2019. Donald also was a Past Master, Member of the York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Jesters where he served as past director. His commitment to service extended beyond his professional and fraternal affiliations as he tirelessly supported the Suez Shriners Patient Transportation Fund and the Suez Shriners Hospital for Children.
Donald was an active member of the community with various roles including being a past president for the YMCA Football program and also as a volunteer with the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo for over 38 years. He also lent his voice as the announcer for the world famous Water Valley Wildcats, showcasing his passion for his community and its endeavors.
Donald found immense joy in the simple pleasures of fishing, hunting, golfing, and cheering on his beloved Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys. Renowned for his humor and captivating storytelling, Donald never met a stranger and left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Above all, Donald cherished his role as a devoted father and "pops/pop pop". He loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events. His legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
Donald is survived by his wife, Shelly Bunnell, his children, Rex and wife Gina Bunnell, Scott and wife Jami Bunnell, Casey and wife Angela Bunnell, Joy and husband Jason Walker, Georgeanne and husband Colin Richards, and Danny and wife Melissa Gauna, stepchildren, Cassie Liebschwager, Ame Liebschwager, and Hollie Liebschwager, grandchildren, Blake, Chase, RJ, Trent, Bailee, Beau, Blaine, Lacy and husband Christian, Kelsey and husband James, Bryce, James, Luke, Jayden, Jordyn, Alexys, Kyley, Trenton, TJ (Buddy), Tiyah, Colton, Danielle, great-grandchild, Paityn, and his sister, Carolyn and husband Frank Shelton. Special family friends Ralph Key and Mike Foster.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Nettie Bunnell, brother Harold Bunnell, and sister Dorothy Ray.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Harper Funeral Home. A celebration of Donald's life will take place on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 11:00am at the Sierra Vista UMC in San Angelo. Burial to follow at Grape Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Suez Shriners Patient Transportation Fund and the Suez Shriners Hospital for Children.
