Dorothy Mayfield Ratliff, 94, a longtime resident of San Angelo passed away on March 14, 2024, at 7:15 PM.
She was born on April 8, 1929, to William Ivy and Edna Tate Mayfield in Brownwood, Texas. She grew up in Talpa, Texas, attending all her school years there except her senior year in 1945 when the family moved to Ozona. Graduating from high school in Ozona, she immediately went to work as secretary for Judge Houston Smith.
She married M.R. “Buddy” Ratliff in McCamey, Texas on August 3, 1947. Moving to San Angelo in October of that year, they continued to live there throughout their 64 years of married life. She resumed her education in 1962 at San Angelo Junior College and was an honor graduate in the graduating class of the new Angelo State University in 1967. In 1975, she earned her master’s degree in education. She had more than 20 enjoyable years of teaching math at Lee Junior High School.
Dorothy is survived by her two sons Ron Ratliff of Houston and Gary Ratliff and wife Patti Ratliff of San Angelo; two grandchildren Brad and Wife Joyce Ratliff; great grandchildren, Rebecca, and Liam of San Antonio, Kim and husband David Meinhardt, great grandchildren Sebastian, Oliver, and Benjamin of San Antonio as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two sisters Billye Joyce of San Angelo and Carolyn Mayfield of Palm Springs, CA. She was preceded by her husband, Buddy Ratliff and parents Ivy and Edna Mayfield, brother Bruce Mayfield, and sisters Laverne McDonald and Patsy King.
Dorothy was a charter member of Southland Baptist Church and enjoyed many years of worship and fellowship with the ladies of the JOY class. She and Buddy were avid square dancers for 35 years and experienced many fun times and trips with their dancing friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Dorothy at Southland Baptist Church on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM. The interment will take place privately at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the Family would love for any personal contributions be made in Dorothy’s name to the Hospice of San Angelo. We want to thank them for their kindness and care they gave to Our mother, Grand Mother, and Great Grandmother.
