Theresa Anne Fortin (Kalinec), 68, of San Angelo, TX passed away after a long battle with heart problems on 25 February 2024 in Austin, TX. She has gone to her heavenly reward to be with her mother and father in heaven. She was born on 26 August 1955 in Corpus Christi, TX. Her parents were Joseph F. Kalinec and Evelyn M. Kalinec (Boerner). She is survived by her loving husband, Maurice G. Fortin, Ph.D., her son Lt. Cmdr. William A. Fortin (spouse Tiffany) currently on duty assignment in London England; and her Grandchild Lily Rose/Ace in Fort Worth, TX. She is also survived by her sister Mary Evelyn Wittliff (spouse Dick) of Corpus Christi, TX; and brothers J. Patrick Kalinec (spouse Laurie) of Fort Collins, CO and Michael Kalinec (spouse Katherine) of Santa Fe, TX. Theresa always enjoyed being with her nephews, nieces, and many cousins.
Theresa and Maurice were married in Orange Grove, TX at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church on 17 August 1974. They lived in Denton, TX for 22 years and they both worked at North Texas State University/University of North Texas in a variety of areas and positions with the majority of their work being with the Campus library. In 1996, they moved to San Angelo, TX for Maurice to become the Director of the Library at Angelo State University. Theresa soon began part-time work in the School of Graduate Studies Office eventually leading to full-time work in recruiting admissions and assisting with thesis reviews for graduate programs on the campus. In 2011, Therea retired after 35 years of work for these two state academic institutions.
Theresa loved working in parish activities in Corpus Christi at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Incarnate Word Academy; in Denton at Immaculate Conception Church, and finally in San Angelo at Holy Angels. She enjoyed singing, knitting, crochet, mosaics, art projects, decorating, twilling, and numerous other crafts. While Maurice was the Director of the ASU Library, each Christmas, her special project was to design and handcraft Christmas ornaments for all of the staff including student assistants. She was very handy around the house and loved working in flower beds. She could always be counted on to help with William’s athletic teams, scouting, and school activities. When William went to Texas A&M and became part of the famed Corps of Cadets, Theresa was a proud member of the San Angelo Aggie Moms Club. She was very proud of William’s naval career in submarines. She especially enjoyed getting tours of Will’s “Boats” (USS San Juan and USS West Virginia).
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the caring doctors, nurses, and aides in all of the various units of Shannon Hospital, Primary Care, and Clinics and also at the Heart Hospital of Austin for their exceptional treatment and concern for Theresa’s wellbeing and health.
The Wake/Rosary service will be on 29 February 2024 in Holy Angels Church at 6 pm. The funeral mass will be on 1 March 2024 in Holy Angels Church at 10 am.
