Phylis Ann Thurston of San Angelo, TX passed away January 14, 2024 at the age of 79. A loving wife, sister, mother, and grandmother, she is survived by her husband Edwin (Ed) Thurston, son John Thurston and wife Jeanine Thurston, grandson Matthew Thurston, and twin brother Philip Briggs.
Phylis was born in El Reno, OK on May 1, 1944, to parents James and Mabel Briggs. She was preceded in death by her parents and older brother Larry Briggs. Phylis received her Bachelor’s degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Social Studies and Sociology Government. After college she moved to Louisiana to begin work with the Social Security Administration. It was there when she met a sailor returning from service to complete college in Baton Rouge and found her future husband Ed. They were married June 23, 1966, in El Reno, OK and relocated to San Angelo, TX sharing a life together for over 57 years.
Phylis was an avid reader, enjoyed playing tennis leading several teams in USTA leagues, loved to cook, and took up hunting with Ed. A fond memory with Ed shortly after getting married was going for rides in their convertible out to the lake. Phylis was always there in support of her family and rarely asked of anything for herself. She was often the chauffeur taking her son to soccer games and band/orchestra performances. She will be missed dearly.
A visitation with the family will be held at Harper Funeral Home on January 21, 2024 from 3:00-5:00 PM. The funeral service will take place on Monday, January 22, 2024 at St. Luke United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM followed by a processional and committal service at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
