It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Rue Gavit, who went to be with the Lord on December 21, 2023, at the age of 83. As a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Shirley modeled kindness, love, beauty and grace throughout her entire life, until her very last moments with us on earth.
Shirley was born May 19, 1940, in Robert Lee, Texas to Oren and Denzel Fletcher. She grew up in San Angelo and attended Lake View High School. She was married to Dan Adney Sr. for 25 years, raising their sons Dan, Rick and John Adney together. As a military family they were stationed at various army bases stateside and a couple of bases in Germany before retiring back to San Angelo. She later married Roger Gavit for 28 years before his passing. Roger was father to James Paul, Pam, Mark, Kelly, and David Gavit. Later in life Shirley and Roger adopted Roger's grandson, Steven Gavit. She was a proud grandmother of numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her devotion to her three boys was unwavering, earning her their deep respect. With the occasional need for discipline of three boys, they never knew when a right hand or hairbrush might be flying their way to keep them in line. The stories that surround Shirley are as numerous as they are endearing; if each person who cherished her were to share a tale, we could spend all day in the memories of a truly incredible woman.
Professionally, Shirley worked as a Real Estate Broker for many years in San Angelo. In retirement she poured her heart into a myriad of artistic endeavors. Her talents were remarkable as she created ceramics, dolls, crochet and quilted blankets, sewn purses, jewelry, acrylic and watercolor paintings, and more. Shirley found joy and companionship in crafting alongside Roger with his woodworking. Together, they transformed their shared love into cherished memories, spending countless weekends at craft fairs. Shirley generously gave her crafts as gifts to friends and family, which will continue to serve as tangible reminders of the love and joy she brought into the lives of so many.
She had a gift for making everyone feel like a friend from the moment they met her. She embraced life and was always eager to join in on any activity or adventure. She loved camping in her RV although it may not have been any further than the USAF Rec Camp or on her daddy's property in Grape Creek.
Shirley is survived by her older sister Anna Belle Dunn and younger brother Randy Fletcher. She is also survived by her closest friend and partner in crime, Virdia Jolley.
Shirley loved to dance, and it's easy to envision her now, gracefully dancing in the arms of Jesus.
The Funeral Service will be 10:00 A.M., Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Bobby Roger officiating. The burial will follow at Robert Lee Cemetery in Robert Lee, TX.
