June Dunagan Smith, 92, of San Angelo, formerly of Uvalde, died November 9, 2023, with both her children nearby, at the Park Plaza Nursing Home.
She was born January 17, 1931 in Milan, Tennessee and moved to Uvalde, Texas when she was fourteen. It was there she met the love of her life, Dick Smith whom she actually married twice, first in a secret wedding in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico on March 20, 1948 and then later at the First Baptist Church in Uvalde.
She was a tenured Bell Telephone employee who after retirement served her Lord and Savior with membership and service at St. Phillips Episcopal Church at Uvalde, Episcopal Church of the Ascention at Montell and most recently Emmanuel Episcopal Church at San Angelo.
June was preceded in death by John Richard “Dick” Smith, her husband for 58 years; her mother Elinor Fewell and husband Elton; and her father John Dunagan and wife Mary; and grandmother, Katherine “Kate” Mills who reared her as a child.
She is survived by daughter, Rebecca Ruth “Becky” Smith of San Angelo; son Russell Smith and wife Linda of San Angelo; granddaughter Shannon Lee Smith Denson and husband Isaac of Whitewright, Texas; grandson John Ryan Smith and wife Maritza of San Angelo; and four grandchildren: Caleb Denson of Odessa, Texas; Joshua Denson of San Angelo; and Madison Smith and Matthew Smith, both of San Angelo. She is also survived by brother Elton Fewell and wife Daisy of Austin; cousin, Nancy Michael and Julie, of Bemidji, MN, and by niece Jill Ann Daggs and husband Joe, and nephew Jim Ray Smith and wife Debbie, each who live near San Antonio.
A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Uvalde on Friday Nov. 17 at 2 p.m.
Pastor Isaac Denson will officiate.
The family would like to express our love and appreciation to those who helped care for her for the last few years; the women from Visiting Angels who visited her at her home; the employees and nurses from the Interim Healthcare Hospice group who followed and cared for her during this final period in her life and to EVERY MEMBER of the staff at the Park Plaza Nursing Home – who made her final days much better than it could have been, “You were all very special to her and the family,” and, the name “Junebug,” will forever hold a place in our hearts.
