Bobby Joe Wood, 88, of San Angelo, Texas went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 28, 2023. He passed away at his home surrounded by family who loved him dearly.
Bobby Joe was born on January 24, 1935 to Lonnie Dee and Elizabeth Wood in Ozark, Arkansas. During high school he boxed where in the early 1950’s he won the Barney Sugarman Memorial Trophy for the State of Arkansas twice. On April 30, 1955 he married Sondra Kay Winfree. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served for 21 years, fighting for his country in both the Korean War and two tours in the Vietnam War. He and his family lived all over the world in Arkansas, Texas, California, and Okinawa. He retired to San Angelo, Texas in 1974 but continued working for various companies, eventually owning his own business. Throughout his life he enjoyed being with family & friends, fishing, gardening, landscaping, and going to eat at the manor.
Bobby Joe loved his family deeply and is survived by the love of his life, his wife Sondra Wood of San Angelo, Texas; his son, Robert Michael Wood and his wife Alice of San Angelo, Texas; his daughter Karen Varnell and her husband Tony of Granbury, Texas. Bobby had three granddaughters; nine great grandchildren, and one great, great granddaughter; and numerous brother-in-law’s, sister-in-law’s, nephews, nieces and cousins.
Bobby Joe was preceded in death by his father, Lonnie Dee Wood, his mother Elizabeth Adkins Wood Leiter, his sister, Betty Sue Mack, and his brother J.L. Wood. He is survived by his brother Billy Don Wood who resides with his wife Pat in San Angelo, Texas.
Visitation is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 30th at Harper Funeral Home in San Angelo, Texas. The Funeral Service is at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 1st, at Glen Meadows Baptist Church followed by the Graveside Burial at Johnson’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
Donations to the Glen Meadows Baptist Church and CALMS Adopt-A-Spot can be made in Bobby Joe’s honor. Cards of Condolence for the family may be left at Glen Meadows Baptist Church.
Bobby Joe will be deeply missed by his family and friends. We Love You More.
