Nancy Louette Showers Slaughter passed away, at the age of 86, on April 28,2023 after a brief illness.
Nancy was born on December 28, 1936, in Houston, Texas to loving parents, Edward Andrew Showers and Elizabeth McEachern Showers. The youngest of three daughters, she enjoyed an idealistic childhood filled with the love of a close family, wonderful connections with extended family and friends, with whom she spent many fun-filled hours playing games and sports, developing a lifelong passion for learning, art, and reading, while pursuing an all-important deep and abiding love for Jesus Christ.
Later in life, Nancy would share her wisdom that she considered these pursuits originating in childhood and evident throughout her life--to be the very requirements beneficial to living a long and healthy life: close, personal relationships, intellectual challenges, creative and physical activity, and a rich spiritual life.
1948 brought about several monumental life changes for Nancy with a move to San Angelo following the death of her father three years earlier, and her mother’s remarriage to her stepfather, Louis E. Scherck, who she dearly loved and considered to be a second father. It was here that she made lifelong friends with a close group of women known as the “Concho Pearls.” Even more significantly, Nancy met the love of her life, Lon Slaughter, whom she began dating in the ninth grade.
She graduated high school from The Hockaday School in Dallas, attended the University of Texas where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority, and transferred to SMU following her engagement to Lon—where he was playing football for the Mustangs. She and Lon married at Emanuel Episcopal Church in 1956 and raised their 4 children mostly in San Angelo, with the exception of short detours to ranches in Brewster and Pecos Counties and Ft. Stockton.
Nancy spent the rest of her life creating a close and loving family of her own with her husband of 66 years and four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She provided her family with a beautiful example of how to live a meaningful and fulfilling life to the end. She read voraciously, travelled extensively, studied art, painted, created beautiful tapestries, played a mean game of tennis, hiked, snow skied and loved to entertain—a true renaissance woman.
A beautiful, elegant woman, Nancy exuded compassion for others, possessing a fearless and positive attitude towards life, and an unforgettable sense of humor. Her exquisite sense of style was evident in every area of her life and enjoyed by her many friends and family every time they walked through the door. Nancy’s innate artistic and creative ability continues to shine through and bless those who enter her beautiful home. She was a blessing to her family, all of whom acclaim her the world’s best wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt.
Nancy was involved in many community projects in San Angelo. She was most proud of helping start Community Bible Study in San Angelo where she continued as a faithful member for many years. More recently, she enjoyed studying the bible as one of the “lady bugs” at Victory Christian Center under Linda Roach. Nancy was also involved with the San Angelo Fine Arts Museum and the University of Texas College of Fine Arts to name a few. She supported many other organizations in San Angelo and elsewhere that had special meaning for her.
