Elmer Ray Mayfield, 88, passed over on April 27, at home surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was born on April 10, 1934, in Winters, Texas, to Wylie and Jewel Mayfield.
He later moved to San Angelo and attended San Angelo High School where he met the love of his life, Betty Jean Powell. He always said that Goodfellow AFB blessed him when Betty and her family moved here because of the base being located here.
Elmer was an active DE (distributive education) student. A class that prepared him well for his profession. He graduated from San Angelo High School in 1953. Following graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Jean Powell on October 30, 1953, at the parsonage at Harris Ave. Baptist Church.
While in high school, Elmer began working at J & K Shoes located in the Village Shopping Center selling shoes. He attended San Angelo College after High School. He later went to work at Gabriel’s when it opened in the village. He was to become an accomplished shoe and handbag buyer and purveyor of men’s, women’s, and children’s shoes along with his assistant manager responsibilities. He traveled to New York City, Las Vegas, and Dallas, to bring the latest shoe fashion to West Texas.
After retiring from the shoe business, Elmer attended Howard College to prepare for another service career at the state school. The men he worked with adored him. He would check out a van and would take the men to visit Betty and his dog, Oscar.
Elmer loved people and never met a stranger. He counts not only those he sold shoes to as friends but the old HEB store, the Walmart Neighborhood Center on Knickerbocker, and Trans Texas Credit Union employees as friends. He was always wanting to share good cheer and an uplifting message with everyone he met. He never missed an opportunity to share one of his favorite songs with others.
Elmer was very active in the Lions Club and the recovery community, having had over 43 years of sobriety and sponsoring many young men who still consider him a father figure and mentor.
He loved his God and Savior and was a member of the Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Elmer is predeceased by his son, David B. Mayfield, grandson, Jason Mayfield, and two brothers, James and Eldon Mayfield. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty Powell Mayfield, their beloved pet dog, Schroeder, daughters Ronda Hayes and husband Larry of San Angelo, and Susan Gill and husband Kevin of Smithville, Texas. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Rowdy Koenig, Stormy Biehl, Zachary Armour, Melissa Zimmerman, Jacob Mayfield, BobbieAnne Carrillo, and seven great-grandchildren.
