Ida Mae Keith Shawn, 91, of San Angelo went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 3, 2022 in San Angelo. Ida Mae was born May 2, 1931, in Midwest, Wyoming to Leslie A. and Ida Gerhardt Keith. The family moved to Colorado City, Texas in 1941 where Ida graduated from Colorado City High School in 1948. She went on to attend McMurray College now McMurray University and graduated from there with honors in 1952. Ida Mae returned to Colorado City and taught at Colorado City Junior High for 3 years. She would go on to attend Sul Ross University in Alpine to work on her master’s degree. While attending Sul Ross University she met A.J. Shawn and they married June 3, 1955. They both received their M.Ed. degrees in 1955. Ida Mae taught in Alpine and later in Carlsbad, New Mexico where they moved. In 1957, they moved to San Angelo when A.J. returned to work for General Telephone. Their daughter Julie was born Aug 29, 1960. Ida Mae was a stay-at-home wife and mother for a number of years. Then she began substituting in many of San Angelo’s Schools. She continued over 20 years, mostly at Glenn Jr. High enjoying the challenges and fellowship of her teenage students.
A lifelong Methodist, Ida Mae was baptized in Miles, joined the First United Methodist Church in Colorado City in 1942, Angelo Heights Methodist Church in 1957 and was a charter member of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church. Ida Mae was a very active charter member of Sierra Vista and taught the Mary-Martha Class for many years and was a member of the W.S.C.S. Ida Mae was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Paul and Rosa Urban Gerhardt and her paternal grandparents, her parents, and her husband A.J. She is survived by her daughter Julie Marie Fowler and husband Tab Fowler (son of her heart.) of Cedar Park, TX; granddaughter, Megan Marie Fowler; grandson, Colton Paul Fowler; her cousins Dorothy Reid, of Sun City, TX, and Paul C. Gerhardt, Jr., of Palm Desert, CA.
The graveside service will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 12, 2022, at the Rowena Protestant Cemetery where her husband, parents, maternal grandparents, maternal great grandparents, and other relatives are buried. Pastor Stan Whites will be officiating the service.
