Gregory John Economidis, of Flower Mound, Texas, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2022, at the age of 92. He was born September 6, 1929, in San Angelo to John and Mary (Joannidou) Economidis.
Gregory grew up in San Angelo on West Avenue B attending Fort Concho Elementary, Edison Junior High, and then on to San Angelo High School. He worked at his dad’s café, Riverside Café, in downtown San Angelo when he was young. As a senior in high school, he started working at Montgomery Ward and continued to work there while attending San Angelo Junior College.
In 1954, he met and married the love of his life, Eddie Mae Newman, his wife of 68 years. After their marriage, they built a house on North Garfield Street in San Angelo where they raised their family and lived for 67 years. He retired from Montgomery Ward as Store Manager in 1980. During that time, he also worked various other jobs at different places and times; Highland Grocery with lifelong friends Mike and Johnny Kalaitzes, ran a spotlight at the City Auditorium and Coliseum with his cousin Pete Economidis, a cook at Zentner’s Steak House with his brother Nag, C&J Grocery with lifelong friends Chris and Johnny Kouvelis, and ran the chains at San Angelo Stadium for 51 years. If that was not enough, he coached his son John’s YMCA football and baseball teams (many times to City Championships). In 1981, he started as an appraiser at the Tom Green County Tax Appraisal District and retired from there in 2020 after 39 years.
Gregory is survived by his wife Eddie Mae of Flower Mound, Texas. Daughter Mary Ann Boyd of San Angelo, and son John Gregory Economidis and his wife Elaine of Flower Mound. Six grandchildren, who were all his pride and joy, Michael Economidis and his wife Christen of Lubbock, Texas; Melissa Nash and her husband Chad of Trophy Club, Texas; Thomas Economidis and his wife Kristen of Seaside, California; James Economidis and his wife Jordan of Northlake, Texas; John Mark Economidis and his wife Jessica of Trophy Club, Texas; and Matthew Boyd of Keller Texas. He had 16 great grandchildren; Eden, Shiloh, Judah, and Simeon Economidis of Lubbock, Texas; Sophie, Eva, and Mia Economidis of Seaside, California; Lucy, Eleanor, Margaret, June, and Peter Economidis of Northlake, Texas; and Jack, Leo, Gabriel, and Lola Economidis of Trophy Club, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Harry Economidis and Nag Economidis, and son-in-law Marvin Boyd, who was of great help to Gregory and Eddie Mae over the years.
To say Gregory was a people person would be a gross understatement! Yes, he loved his family and friends, but truth is he very seldom came across anyone who he did not try to befriend. Gregory had always been a man of faith, but in March 1986, he came to know Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior. If you knew him and had been near him, you no doubt were a recipient of what he would always say, “I love you and Jesus loves you, too!”
Pallbearers will be Michael Economidis, Thomas Economidis, James Economidis, John Mark Economidis, Matthew Boyd, and Chad Nash; Honorary Pallbearer, Melissa Nash.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Pinewood Hills Independent Retirement Living, Precise Personalized Care Hospice personnel Lisa Sbonik and Justin, and the Flower Mound Fire Department paramedics.
