Garland Freeze, 81, passed away Monday, April 4, 2022, in San Angelo.
Public viewing will from 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM with the family receiving friends from 4:00 until 6:00 PM Sunday, April 10, 2022. Mass will be at 10:00 AM Monday April 11, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Juan Lopez-Cortez, officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with military rites will be afforded by Ft Hood Honor Guard. Arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.
Mr. Freeze was born July 16, 1940, in Columbus, Ohio. He was a 1958 graduate from South High School in Columbus. Garland married Clara Butler on October 21, 1960. Garland Retired as Chief Warrant Officer 4 after serving 24 years in the military being stationed at Darmstadt, Germany, Okinawa, Korea, Ft. Meade, Maryland, Ft. Devins, MA and Goodfellow AFB. Garland has been a resident of San Angelo since 1989. Garland started as a Letter Carrier then advanced to Mail Process Supervisor and promoted to Postmaster, he served as Postmaster in Ballinger and Brady retiring from the Post Office after 20 years of service.
Garland has been a mentor in the Big Brother/Big Sister Program with a student at Lakeview High School, served on board of Habit for Humanity, West Texas Workforce Solutions. He was a deliver for Meals for the Elderly, served on the Convention & Visitor Bureau Board, was a member of The Knights of Columbus through St. Joseph Catholic Church, member of the Boys & Girls Club, American Legion Post 572, Torchbearer Award recipient of the Texas State Conference of the NAACP, United Way Allocation Panel, meet with new police recruits San Angelo Police Dept. Chief Challenge, SAISD 2008 Bond Oversite Committee, Shannon Volunteer Program, the San Angelo Community Board, and served as President of the NAACP for 10 years.
Garland loved to read, listening to Jazz and watching the Washington Redskins. Garland was member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Clara Freeze of the home; his son, Perry L. Freeze, Sr. of San Angelo; two daughters, Renarda Y. Freeze of Dallas, and Garlanda E. Freeze of Brooklyn, New York; five grandchildren, Patrease, Perry Jr., Nealie, April, and Kieran; and three great grandchildren, Samuel, Suinta, Sophia and several nieces and nephews.
Garland was preceded in death by his parents, Emerson and Florence Freeze; a son, Garland Freeze, Jr.; a sister, Patricia Byrd; and a brother, Monte Freeze.
