Grace Laden Rogers (“MaMa”) went home to her Lord and Savior in the early morning hour of March 29, 2022 at the age of 96. She was born October 27, 1925 in Mt. Pleasant Texas to Will Laden and Leora Duncan. Grace married Travis Milton Rogers on August 18, 1943. Travis was an airman, serving his country during the height of World War II. They had 45 years together and raised three children while living all over the world. Travis and Grace began their marriage in Pratt, Kansas, then moved to San Antonio, Texas, from there, they moved to Wiesbaden, Germany, then Mechanicsburg, Ohio, on to Mississippi City, Mississippi, then to Shiroi, Japan, Kadena, Okinawa returning back to the States to Bladensburg, Maryland before finally moving to San Angelo, Texas in 1959.
With the Rogers family firmly planting roots in San Angelo, Grace worked as a realtor for Markim Realty and later worked at the airport as an owner of National Car Retails where she met many celebrities that came through San Angelo. Grace’s most cherished moments were the times she spent with family and close friends. Every person who knows her has been touched by her wisdom, kindness, patience and love. Her hugs could heal you from the inside out, and she had plenty to go around. Grace was an active member at Southgate Church of Christ in San Angelo, Texas, and considered her church a part of her family. Church members often call her "Ms.Grace” when speaking with her or telling others how she has brought joy to their hearts.
When her grandchildren were growing up, she often had a camera in hand spending many hours taking pictures and developing them with her husband. When spending time with them, she encouraged exploring the outdoors, especially at the ranch and in the garden. She cultivated that love of nature tending to her backyard plants with as much care as she gave everything in her life. Even the flowers were made to feel special. She gave many stray cats a warm meal and safe place to sleep on her porch as they must have heard about the wonderful human that lived on Harvard Avenue. Many found their way inside and onto her lap on a cold night. The same lap she shared with her grandkids reading books cuddled in one of the handmade quilts she lovingly created.
Grace was also a gifted writer of stories and poems, and in 1997 was published in a book called, "West Texans Remember the Home Front” by Ava E. Mills, telling the story of her time in West Texas during World War II. She loved telling stories and if you ever heard the story of the cow in the road, and the laughter that filled the room as she told it, you have been blessed with the one of her finest!
She is survived by her three children: Kaye and her husband Gus Alexander, Travis, Jr. and his wife Nancy Rogers, and Gary and his wife Barbara Rogers, all of San Angelo; her brother Jerry and wife Norma Laden of Longview; five grandchildren Paul Alexander of San Angelo, Elena and husband Kevin Kent of Austin, Beau and wife Julie Rogers of Keller, Bart Rogers of San Antonio, and Adam Rogers of Ruidoso, NM; and 11 great-grandchildren: Amelia, Zackery and Brantley Alexander of San Angelo; Carson of Orange, CA, Griffin, and Eiley Grace Kent of Austin; Reagan and Cody Rogers of Keller; James Rogers of San Antonio; Lucas and Paige Rogers of Ruidoso, NM. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many wonderful friends and her beloved church family.
She was preceded in death by her parents Will and Leora Laden of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; her husband, Travis Rogers, Sr.; her sister, Margaret Ann Austin Huges Haigood of Granbury, Texas.
